Manchester United have links with several clubs worldwide including Royal Antwerp in Belgium, Desportivo Brasilia in Brazil and FC Twente in the Netherlands. In the example of Desportivo, United scouts place players they have discovered in South America with the club until they are 18, where United then pay Desportivo a fixed fee if they wish to sign the player, if not the player stays in Brazil. Desportivo also receive 50% of any sell on fee.
Work permits are harder to obtain in the UK than in some European countries so at this stage Twente enter and take on the players from Desportivo to further the players education and training until he qualifies for an EU passport.
